Celebrating the Life and Legacy of John Henry Dawson, Jr.
John Henry Dawson, Jr., a beloved father, friend, and mentor, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on August 8, 1931, in Talbotton, Georgia, John was the cherished only child of Mary Frances Adams and John Henry Dawson, Sr. He spent his formative years in Thomaston, Georgia, and graduated from Drake High School in 1951.
After high school, John proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country with dedication and honor. In 1953, he married the love of his life, Sara Lucille Walker, beginning a lifelong journey of love, partnership, and devotion. Together, they raised four sons, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring family bonds.
During his distinguished Air Force career, John discovered his passion for electronics. He excelled not only in his work but also in teaching and mentoring others, leaving a lasting impact on all who trained under his guidance. His service exemplified commitment, excellence, and a deep sense of duty.
Following his honorable discharge, John transitioned into the furniture business in Wisconsin. Known widely for his integrity, friendly spirit, and unwavering work ethic, he earned the admiration of colleagues and customers alike. His career in the furniture industry was marked by diligence, creativity, and a legacy of quality craftsmanship.
Upon retiring from Hack’s Furniture, John returned to Georgia, settling in Jonesboro to be closer to family and the community he loved. There, he embraced a peaceful and fulfilling life, reconnecting with old friends and reflecting with gratitude on a life rich with purpose.
A man of deep and abiding faith, John was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. In 1998, he and his devoted wife renewed their wedding vows at the Atlanta Mission Pentecostal Deliverance Church, Inc.—a beautiful testament to their enduring love and commitment.
John had a profound love for mathematics and delighted in sharing that passion with others. He enjoyed simple, meaningful pleasures: long walks, classic western movies, and cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers. Yet it was in his yard—his sanctuary—that John found his greatest peace. He tended it faithfully, continuing his favorite pastime until just weeks before his passing.
Rest in peace, John Henry Dawson, Jr. Your kindness, wisdom, and unwavering spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who had the privilege of knowing you.
